Joe Hancock Drifter is a 1997 bay roan stud of mostly Haythorn Ranch breeding, recognized with the AQHA’s first “Best Remuda “award. Raised by Randy and Susan Brookings he carries the well known Funny B brand. As a yearling Joe was part of a transaction between Randy Brookings and Don Woitte that brought Joe to Alberta and Berrys Babe and Heart Hancock to Texas where they have raised some high percentage Blue Valentine and Buck Hancock colts for the Brookings. We bought Joe from Don Woitte as a four year old and have raised close to 200 colts from him. Joe was easy to start, a trait he passes on to his colts plus good size and conformation. He has a nice long stride that really covers ground, a good saddle back and withers and good, hard black feet. Perhaps his greatest attribute is he has tremendous size without sacrificing refinement. A lot of the big Hancock studs are a little on the course side, Joe is not. Standing 16.1 hands and around 1450 lbs. he carries it well, moves well, with a nice refined head and neck. In fact, it would be hard to find a Hancock stud with his size with as nice a head.
Most of his colts end up with local working cattle ranches where they are quite popular, and we are using a number of his daughters in our broodmare band where they are performing well. We are also riding several mares here on the ranch. You don’t have to go back very far on his papers to start finding “legends,” Joe is 14.06% Joe Hancock and 9.375% Driftwood. Outside mares bred Private Treaty. |
These 4 photos were taken July 2nd, 2009, the day we took Joe in off the
range from breeding mares to hand breed several outside mares.
For a better feel for how big Joe is, Jed is 6’3” and is standing slightly uphill from Joe.
